Post-Processing — Tailored to Your Specific Machine Setup

The Final Translation Step

A CAM system plans toolpaths in a generic, machine-independent way. Post-processing is the final translation layer that converts that generic plan into code formatted exactly for one specific machine — its controller type, its particular tool numbering, and its unique set of configured options. This is closely related to, but distinct from, general G-code generation for a controller family, since post-processing accounts for a specific machine’s exact configuration.

Why Generic Output Isn’t Enough

Two machines running the exact same controller software can still be set up differently — different tool numbers assigned to the same physical tools, different offsets configured, different optional features enabled or disabled. A post-processor tailored to the actual machine accounts for these specifics, rather than producing code that technically runs but doesn’t match how the machine is genuinely configured.

What a Good Post-Processor Handles

Beyond basic code formatting, a well-built post-processor correctly handles tool change sequences specific to that machine’s tool changer, coolant on/off commands matched to how the machine actually controls coolant, and safe start and end-of-program routines that leave the machine in a known, safe state.

One-Time Setup, Ongoing Reliability

Setting up a correct post-processor for a machine is largely a one-time investment — once configured properly, every subsequent program generated for that machine benefits from the same reliable, correctly formatted output, removing a recurring source of manual editing and potential errors.

Need Programs That Run Correctly on Your Machine?

RunTechEngineer tailors post-processing to each specific machine setup, ensuring CAM-generated programs run exactly as intended rather than needing manual correction at the controller.

This is often the final step after toolpath simulation confirms a program is ready — or Contact Us to discuss your machine’s setup.
