What Is CAD (Computer-Aided Design)? A Beginner’s Guide

CAD software used to design a 3D mechanical model

A Simple Definition

CAD, or Computer-Aided Design, refers to software used to create precise digital models of physical objects — everything from a single bracket to a complete assembled product. Instead of drawing on paper, designers build parts digitally, with exact dimensions, defined materials, and features that can be measured, modified, and shared instantly.

From Sketches to Precise Models

Modern CAD is usually parametric, meaning dimensions and features are linked by relationships rather than fixed in place — change one measurement, and everything connected to it updates automatically. This makes CAD models far more flexible than a static drawing, since a design can be revised dozens of times without starting over.

What CAD Models Are Actually Used For

A finished CAD model rarely exists just to look at. It feeds directly into CAM software for CNC machining, into slicing software for 3D printing, and into simulation tools for structural or thermal analysis — making it the common starting point for nearly every modern manufacturing process.

CAD vs Reverse Engineering

Most CAD work starts from a blank screen and a concept, but not always. When a physical part exists with no original design file, reverse engineering uses scanning or careful measurement to rebuild that part as an accurate, editable CAD model.

From Model to Manufacturable Design

A model that looks correct on screen isn’t automatically ready for production. Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews a CAD model specifically for whatever process will actually build it, and technical drawings translate the finished model into the dimensioned reference a machine shop or inspector actually needs.
